Do a search on Google right now and see the ads on the right? These are Paid Search Ads!
Paid Search uses a Cost Per Click (CPC) model where you pay for the advertising every time a customer clicks one of your ads. Typically theses CPC’s are £0.10 – £1.00 per click but can spiral up to £50 in the most competitive of markets! The search engines tie your ads to a search phrase and rank them using a “blind” auction system, so those that pay more rank higher.
A New Quality element has been introduced ensuring that the higher the quality of the ad the lower your equivalent CPC will be. This means that increasing your ROI is not achieved simply by reducing your position but by increasing the relative quality. Ads promoting “Blue Widgets” versus “Red Widgets” will develop a higher quality score for the search phrase “I Want a Blue Widget” – Makes sense? the ad has also increased the relativity to the search phrase thus increasing the likely hood the user will select that ad over your competitors.
Many campaigns hold thousands of search phrases and hundreds of ads, each combination with its own quality score and CPC. You can imagine the complexities in managing them to maximise ROI.
